Attaching whoopies to a gathered end hammock

I've been hanging for a couple years with a Dream Hammock Raven and Warbonnet Blackbird. I decided I want to experiment a little bit and just ordered one of the $25 Appalachian hammocks from RBTR. Should be here in a couple days. My understanding is that this is just the hammock with no suspension ar all. I have whoopie slings I plan to use with marlin spike hitch and toggles. Here's my question: how do I attach the whoopie to the hammock? Do I need to run some sort of cord through the end channels first? Just larks head the whoopies to the gathered ends? Seems like I should be able to figure this out, but I can picture me doing it wrong and dropping to the ground in the middle of the night. Thanks for any advice.

    Answer is yes

You can thread the whoopies through the end channel and larkshead them to the hammock.

However this will have them attached semi-permanently and not easily swapped out to your other hammocks. Most will agree that they prefer to have the whoppies detachable in the event there are wet.

Most folks will larkshead a continuous loop spliced in Amsteel through the end channel and then attach the whoopie between the straps and the loops. Tons of ways to make that connection.. there are hardware options that can be spliced into the continuous loop or if your straps are long enough you can skip the whoopies altogether and connect the straps to the loops with a beckett hitch, j-band or lapp hitch.

My preferred as well, but agree with all the above.

One point... which may not make any difference... I prefer 1/8" CL's on gathered ends. The size difference is minimal, but at least in my own mind... might wear on the fabric just ever so sligthly less than the smaller diameter 7/64". That being the case, it might discourage me from larksheading my single line whoopies directly over the dual lines of a CL.

Non related, but I picked up one of those AH's myself. Not too shabby, hu! ;-)

Well.. to be candid, my preference is for larksheading Dynaglide CL's, with integrated diamond knots that create a thumb loop at the end, then a becket hitch is tied just under the diamond. Also use that diamond knot as a stopper when/if I add a ucr (which isn't often).

I am constantly changing hammocks, though my suspension stays the same.. 1.9 or 2.2 Kevlar.

Thanks MikekiM! That makes sense. I have a couple continuous loops I can try this weekend.

Yeah, seems like a good price to play around with. I want to try hanging without a ridgeline just to feel what the difference is.

Really no difference. Without an SRL you're just adjusting sag by your suspension hang angle. With different distances between trees your end angles can vary once you load your hammock so more adjustments might be needed to hit your comfort zone. The SRL just dials that element out so once it's set... the amount of sag is consistent with each and every hang and makes your actual suspension angle much more forgiving.

I added a UCR SRL to my AH. Especially this time of year when I'm using an UQ and UQP, once I have those fitted up nicely, and with the SRL... since the sag is consistent... I don't have to readjust my UQ gear from hang to hang like I would if the sag was always just a bit different.

And to be honest... I like my SRL organizer and a place to hang gear from.;-)

    YMMV

Why overcomplicate things, thread em thru the end channels and cinch em up. The little bit of water they might retain won't matter.
