    Weight on membrane winter tarp

Anyone have a weight on a membrane winter tarp?
Trying to compare weight savings over silpoly before I order fabric.
    Thanks.

I have a 0.9 oz/yard Hummingbird Hammocks Pelican tarp. It weighed 12.3 oz before seam-sealing. It has rolled and hemmed edges with no extra grosgrain. There are four corner pullouts, plus the door corners, and two panel pullouts on each side. So 12 reinforced grosgrain pulls (no D-buckles) and an attached stuffsack. Everything on the tarp is cat-cut, not a straight edge on it, it pitches nice and tight.

The material on the Pelican seems to be identical to my Simply Light Designs Simplicity (asymmetrical) tarp. The Simplicity tarp is Xenon fabric I believe. Its total weight with guylines, stuffsack, and 25 feet of Zing-It came to exactly 8 oz.

The Hummingbird Pelican tarp is an open source design. I'm not sure where to get the plans, but apparently they're out there. It might be helpful to hunt those down and give them a look before you start cutting your fabric.

My whole winter tarp setup with lines (No Stakes) is just under 18 oz. That includes all my lines for the pullouts and a very long continuous ridgeline so I can use trekking poles on the panel pulls. To keep weight down I used prusiks attached to the tarp instead of lineloks. I don't know how much weight it saved, if any. It saved me some 'wait' though! I had Zing-It. I didn't have lineloks.

Hopefully these numbers help you a little. The Xenon / 0.9 sil-poly seems like a nice compromise if you don't have a Cuben budget.
