There should be at least two feet of snow in the bush but the snowmobile trail should be packed, if it's there at all.
The OFSC said the trail was of 'limited availablity', so if it's there, take it for about 200 yards and keep an eye out for a freshly broken trail on the left. If you'd rather head in with company, I'm sure it'll be easy to rendezvous with someone at the Timmies in Huntsville Hwy 60 on Friday morning.
I was planning on calling a couple of tackle shops in Hunstville and Algonquin Outfitters Oxtounge shop late next week to check the ice conditions. I likely wouldn't venture out onto the ice alone in any case, not until I've drilled a couple of holes to check the thickness. I'm 90% sure it's fine, but why take the risk?
Fishing: You can certainly jig with a normal rod but it'll be a little awkward because the tip tends to sway around a little more. Many a fisherman has simply used line wrapped onto a stick for jigging.
I just saw this video on Alexis' wonderful channel. I consider it a good sign regarding the conditions of where we're going.
