Sawyer mini still works? after freezing

Recently camped, over night low 24
I failed to keep filter in pocket overnight.
Our backpacking trip morphed into car camping
We used our bottled water instead of filtering
Filter hung inside pack at end of hammock
About two months ago when returning from backpack camping, I backflushed sawyer mini at home. Then there was a Phantom guess.

Why not backflush with water first and then backflush with air (in both directions), in an attempt to remove water from inside filter.

At home today, I “checked” filter, and it seemed to work. Water flowed through same as new
I have no idea if it’s actually working
I can’t see germs and micro particles in water!
Lots of stuff I don’t know

    Maybe I lucked out
And maybe my “luck” had nothing to do with backflushing with air after backflushing with water Just because something still works does not necessarily mean I caused it to work

    Your thoughts and experience
    Thanks

After freezing, the filter material likely cracks. These fissures allow whatever through. For me, the reasonable price of the filter is worth avoiding the aftermath of drinking bad water.

While I like the idea of the double flush.. my choice would be to replace that filter if it froze. Cheap insurance me thinks.
Yes, my pack weighs 70lbs, but it's all light weight gear....

Better to err on side of caution
    Although...
These filters, when new, are shipped from manufacturer to a distribution warehouse and then shipped again in a tractor trailer to retailer.
When these “dry goods” are shipped, they are probably shipped in a freight trailer that is not temperature controlled. Whole pallets of new water filters could be subjected to freezing temperatures. With no damage?

It's not the cold that's the problem. You could take a brand new unused one outside in sub zero weather and it would be fine. It's once water is introduced. Water expands when frozen and cracks the filter.

Yup, water expands when frozen, cracking the filter. Get a new one and chalk it up to trail lesson learned.
BTW, if it gets cold enough, Aqua Mira will freeze and its container can crack and then leak and then lose its contents. Guess how I found that out?
