Not sure I’m following what you are describing. Could you post a picture?

A few years ago we had a group hang at Lower Forge in the Pine Barrens. Friday night the low was 17* F, and I got up to water the bushes at 4 or 5 am. I found new member Vagabound, sitting by a tiny fire, shivering to death. I knew he had just bought a brand-new 0* UQ so him freezing didn't make sense.

"You just bought a 0* UQ," I said. "How could you be cold?"

    Vagabound replied, "That's all I brought. I didn't bring a top quilt: I didn't think I'd need one."

Maybe he didn't need one, if he had only remembered to bring his battery clamps!

Battery clamps will add far more weight than the top quilt will. Unless you clip them strategically to your body as well, then you can count them as worn weight...
Yes, my pack weighs 70lbs, but it's all light weight gear....

Why not skip the insulation and hang over the dying fire? I like Flexi-Ducts best, though

I prefer to hike with an overweight hairy women that snores. She'll scare off the bears, keep me warm if need be, and not complain about the cold....Seriously though I would personally prefer to have the TQ with me even if it was only a costco blanket or woobie.
