    First DIY Hammocks

    Hey Folks,

Decided to DIY two hammocks, one 10'6"" and one 11" to see which I like more. I've never made a hammock and don't know how to sew but not worried about that. The whole thing is a learning experience and I have to do it to learn. Any tips or advice/ things people recommend to do extra would be awesome and thanks in advance! These were both going to be just basic netless, but I'm pretty happy to throw mods at them if the mods are worth doing.

That being said, I had a question about sewing channels. I've only used hammocks that use sewn channel ends and was going to sew these with channel ends. The sides are decorative more or less so not worried about those. Is 70 weight poly thread sufficient for this or would 50 be recommended? I consider it a structural feature since it will be holding me up.

    Thanks!

I have made more hammocks than I count. Mara 70 on all of them

I usually add harwareless side pull outs and interior loops at the ends to attaching stuff.
If it's a netless or a Half Wit style, I put Knotty Mods at both foot ends.

If it's a removable net, end caps are added to close that potential point of entry.

    Typically use an fixed SRL.

I always to sewn channels. Fold the end in 3". Then fold that 3" in half again and run three parallel seams about 3/32" apart. That gives three rows of stitching through four layers of fabric. Never had an end channel fail.

Yes, my pack weighs 70lbs, but it's all light weight gear....

    Hey Mike,

Awesome information thanks! By chance do you have any pictures of a hammock you made? I'd love to see what your pull outs and tabs look like as well as the end caps.

    Cheers!

I've made several hammocks this way. He does a nice job of a how-to - you don't even have to cut the fabric.

I add my own version of this to 60" and under hammocks. I make it out of noseeum to save weight:

Dig around in my HammockForums Albums.. I have lots of build pictures. End caps, zippers, pull-outs etc.

This album is the removable bugnet hammock.. The interior tabs and side pullouts are way overkill compared to how I do them now. I can find some pictures for of how I have simplified them. I am more focused on simplifying things these days.

I always cut the corners of the hammock a little shorter (about an inch off each end and slope it up about 7 inches.) It adds a little fiddle factor to sewing the channels at the end but it make the edge a little shorter and your feet won’t fall off the edge as much. It is the little things like this that make a vendor designed hammock fabulous. It is worth the work.
The essential part of me can not be discussed here. Ask me in person.
