83% the length of the hammock seems about standard.

There is no magic way. You simply try out different lengths, preferably over night, and stick with the one that feels most comfortable to you. I know that 83% is touted as the perfect length and many hammock makers use a 83% ridgeline. However, after trying many different settings, I greatly prefer the Warbonnet ridgeline length of ~90%. It gives me the flattest lay. So just find your own perfect ridgeline length.
