    Mother of All Tarps??

OK, so winter is approaching in North Carolina and I do most of my camping with Boy Scouts so I generally focus on privacy and comfort.

Thinking about building a monster winter tarp that would allow me to walk under my tarp without hunching over too much and still reach all the way to the ground with an internal pole mod for extra room. This would use 3 lengths of 1.6 silpoly using a modified french flat felled seam to bind the 3 lengths together.

12 foot long, 14 foot wide with doors and internal pole mod.

I have another winter tarp made from 1.1 XL silpoly (from Ripstop) that is 12X12 with doors and internal pole mod. Works great but I either have about 1 foot gap at the bottom or need to hunch over more than I want.

Any thoughts? have I gone one step too far over the edge?

You've not gone too far. Build it and show us how it works out.

Another forum member just built a hammock you can lay sideways in.

    Nothing is over the edge!

I imagine it will weigh a couple of three or four pounds.

    Seam sealing probably necessary.

Good luck! You'll need a big open floor space.

Hilliberg's Tarp 20 may be another option perhaps... 14.4 ft x 14.4 ft. Pricey but very high quality.

Just hem on another foot to the bottom perimeter of your 12x12. If you keep the bottom foot or two on the machine side it's a pretty simple job. You could even leave the tie outs where they are by stitching above and to the inside. This would leave you with a "side wall" possibly eliminating the need for poles.

And no seam-sealing required, because who cares, if it leaks a little, that far from your head!

Good thought but I like my current tarp and it is great for most of the year, plus I cat cut the sides and this would make adding 1 foot more difficult plus I would have a door issue

Another idea that's a lot like this one is to stitch on a really strong velcro. I would use steam tape but like it was pointed out earlier the stitch will be low to the ground so it's not a must. That way your tarp is modular. You can bring your sidewalls or not.
Take that idea a little further and now you have 2 sidewalls and 2 end pieces all with velcro. DIY modular palace!
