    Sidecar vs Peakshelf

I'm trying to decide which to get on my hammock. What are they used for? I was planning to get a peak shelf to hold my keys and phone, paperback book, small flashlight...those sort of things. Then I saw a sidecar and thought that's way too big for the same items I'd put in my peak shelf. So then what exactly do you put in the sidecar?
I understand only Dutch makes the sidecar, but I am getting a Chameleon from him and wasn't sure if I should get a peak shelf or sidecar. I'm also getting a Darien but was told I can only get a peakshelf...which is fine. I have a ridgeline organizer right now for my keys, phone, book...but I don't like how I have to sit up and dig down INTO the organizer. It's awkward, hard...So I found the peakshelf and that seemed to be the answer. But maybe the sidecar is better?

Check out the side sling. It works great and isn’t too deep

I do not own either, so I am unable to comment unfortunately.
However, I have noticed that it seems as though you are making one of the mistakes that I made when I first started, asking tons of questions on this forum, and doing extensive research and trying to buy a perfect setup off the bat. My advice is to go out and camp with what you have. Eventually, you will figure out what changes need to be made. Also, presumably, the load would be distributed differently with those options. What I did with things like that was to do something that simulated each and see which is more comfortable if there is any noticeable difference.

Here are some options. I do not have a sidecar but do have a sidesling.
Shows peak shelf and other stuff as well.

    Sidecar vs Peakshelf

Here’s an alternative that I have found works pretty well and can be attached to any hammock. It’s a zippered pouch designed to be hung from the inside of the peak, mimicking much of the functionality of a peak shelf. It can store a lot of things. I have tried peak shelves before and prefer this.

I have the sidecar and the peak shelf, and in two years, have never used either of them. Not even once. They're there for show.

This is a fair point. But on the other hand it can be helpful to gather lots of information upfront too.

So...I like the peak shelf. I don't actually have one, but I have a home-made gear hammock made of mesh that goes in the same place as a peak shelf and does the same thing, more or less. It's very easy to chuck stuff into it. Things I have put in it include:

    phone
    kindle
    eye mask
    ear plugs
    medication
    headlamp
    spare batteries for headlamp
    hat
top quilt (it's a tight squeeze though)
    water bottle
    etc.

I can access everything in it without having to sit up or shift my position. I can rummage and find things by feel, or can sometimes see through the mesh to their exact location.

I've never used a sidecar, and can see it might have similar qualities. I totally agree with you on the awkwardness and fiddliness of ridgeline organisers.

I have all 4. In the sidecar I put my boots...if they are not wet...and a large coat if the weather calls for it. It is too deep for small items.

Peak shelf is for gloves, hat and glasses case.

Ridgeline is for phone and water bottle unless it is too cold. Then they go on my body.

Sidesling is for something I cant mention on this site or my message will be deleted. Easy, quick access. I usually tuck my pants there also...bunched up in the far end.

That is for truck camping. If I'm trying to shave grams for a backpacking trip I remove the sidecar and sidesling.
