JRB Old Rag Mt vs High Sierra Sniveller

Hello all. I’m trying to decide between the 2 quilts. I have always heard good things about the high Sierra. Has anyone used the old rag mountain as a top quilt? Trying to have some versatility. I have a sleeping bag I can use when using it as an under quilt. And want to use it as a top quilt when in a tent.

When sleeping in a tent are you a side sleeper or an active sleeper who tosses and turns throughout the night? If so the extra width of the High Sierra will help prevent unintentionally venting the quilt while moving around.

Th High Sierra is 4" wider than the ORM, hence maybe better for the restless sleeper, or side sleeper in a tent. Also, the HSS is wearable, can replace or add to a parka while sitting around camp, but you might not want to sit close to the fire and get sparks/embers on it.

I have one and it works fine as a top quilt. I also have a 3 season Sierra sniveler. I have found that in reality I don’t wear the Sierra sniveler, although could if I needed to. I am not sure the trade off of the Velcro strip where the head hole is, is worth the flexibility.

I agree with DrPhun, I have been using the Sierra Sniveler since 2015 and have never used the head hole other than to show someone. Its a neat idea but unnecessary IMO. My next top quilt would be another brand that does not have this feature. I will also say that the JRB quilt has worked flawlessly for me and I would highly recommend it. Great company and people by the way.

So I have to eat my words. I backpacked Tar Jacket ridge (AT section in Va) this past weekend and it got down to 19 degrees during the night. Guess who woke up Sunday morning and stuck their head through the JRB quilt and wore it like a coat....yea that was me. So when you want to stay warm while you are eating breakfast and don't have a fire this is the ticket. Great job JRB and great product.IMG_1057.JPG
