    Lightweight Suspension idea?

Hello everyone, I've got a new suspension idea and can not seem to figure out why no one uses it.

I was looking at some new tree hunger straps and then had an idea. So went into my cellar and pulled out my belay sling. It weighs less packs down more and holds more weight. One is only 19g ? there pretty abrasive resistant too.

So these with whoopie slings is a hammockers dream. Has anyone ever used this method and if not why not?

    Thanks Ben

    Is it made of nylon?
If you prepare for failure you will probably succeed.

For total suspension weight, there is nothing that is going to be lighter and simpler than UHMWPE or Kevlar webbing tied to the tree and attached to hammock CL with J-Bend or Lapp Hitch.

Complete weight will be around 50g (uhmwpe) to 70g (Kevlar 3.3) for 2x 12ft straps. No other straps, cord or hardware required.

Am I reading correctly that the width of the webbing used in that sling is only 8mm? If so, that's only about 1/3 the surface area on the tree compared to what a 1 inch wide strap provides. So it's probably not the most tree-friendly option. FWIW.

If I'm thinking of the same thing...When i starting out hammocking i used a 2.4m/8ft dyneema sling. At the time they were soft, strong & light...and available locally.

Now keep a shorter version in my pack & if my webbing isn't long enough to go around a large tree I use it as a extender.

Also wrap it around a smaller diameter tree or branch & clip my pack onto it, to keep it off the ground away from small gnawing mammals.

There are nylon & dyneema versions. Smaller widths are dyneema, wider widths are nylon.

    Its a endless/round sling, they're doubled when wrapped around a tree trunk...so 8mm laid flat becomes 16mm, 12mm becomes 24mm etc etc.

I've recently gone to these 1.4 g/ft Dyneema straps. I'm attaching them to the continuous loops using a j-bend. I think this is my go to suspension at 1.5 ounces a pair. for 15' straps
