    NJ > Mullica River > 8th Annual Thanksgiving Turkey Trek > Nov 29 - Dec 1

November is almost here, and that can only mean one thing – it’s time to start thinking about the 8th Annual NJ Thanksgiving Hang!

Last year was an epic adventure, with monsoon conditions, 4”+ of rain, the camp turned into a lake, people slept in cars, I ended up on the ground for the first time in almost a decade, etc. Definitely one of our more memorable trips in recent history!

Over the years this hang has evolved from its humble beginnings into a large-scale production, but between work, planning the NJ Fall Hang, and other life commitments this year I think we need something simpler - so we’re stripping everything down, and going back to basics. This hang started off as an excuse to get out and walk off all the food eaten on Thanksgiving, and that’s what we’re going to do – the return of the Turkey Trek!

    When
Thanksgiving weekend, Friday November 29th – Sunday December 1st #optoutside

    Mullica River Camp

    Sites
I’ve booked our old favorite, site 8. If we need additional sites, we’ll book them – no need to grab a site yourself for this one.

Important Note: This is a hike in hang. Mullica River Camp is not accessible by car – you can technically get within a mile or so of the camp by service roads, but you cannot legally get a vehicle to camp. So if you’re interested, plan on walking (or canoeing … brrr!) in. It’s 4-5 miles, depending on which direction you come (4.5 from Batsto, 5 from Atsion). The plan is to walk off some of the feasting we’ve done in the days before – cold piney air is good for the soul and digestion. The Fall Hang is next week and the NJ Winter Hang is just a few short months away, so all the car campers can get their fix of the Pine Barrens – this is for the intrepid souls that want to get out and stretch their legs in the crisp pre-winter air.

    Food
This year, it’s BYO. We’ll drop wood and a cooler 1 mile North of camp and go grab it when we get there, so we’ll have some staples like coffee/milk (we don't ever have a hang without fresh pressed coffee), etc. Otherwise, break out those backpacking meals, or pack in something to cook yourself over the fire.

    Cost
We’ll share out the cost of covering sites and wood, so probably $10/person should handle it.

    Temps
In past years, we’ve seen the temp drop down into the teens, and we’ve occasionally had some folks underprepared, though we do our best to prevent that. We’ll know better once we get closer but plan ahead, and don’t be caught off guard. If you want to come but need help with gear, speak up and we might be able to assist.

I’ll post up more details as we go, but this should be enough to get started.

Yeah, the water there is a little dirty, and it has that typical Pine Barrens cedar hue.

I'm thinking about coming, but I have to check if I have a bunch of stuff due the Monday after. I really miss the pines.

If you're coming I'm coming. Don't forget the top quilt!

You're in charge of bringing coffee.
