    Eddie Bauer quilt experience

A few months ago I bought 4 EB blankets from Costco to make 3 underquilts and one top quilt. Last week I got a chance to test their limits. I was in the Smoky Mountains with an overnight low near 34F. Since I read these are good to about 50, maybe 40, I planned on layering up with extra clothes. My primary goal the first night at base camp was test if I would freeze. Second night was about keeping my pack light.
The results are that I didn't freeze but I wouldn't call it cozy either, more like survivable. I was slightly chilly but managed several hours of sleep. So I think it was successful.
The third and fourth night I was back at base camp where I added a second underquilt and pulled out the 30 degree bag. That made those nights cozy.
So I'm actually impressed that I got usable performance that low on the thermometer.
I'll try to remember to post a photo later.

Glad the quilts worked out. Thanks for posting your results, tests like yours are very valuable to the rest of us using similar gear. I have a double layer EB underquilt that I've had down to about 30 deg in an unexpected cold snap. I stayed warm but I'd figured 30 deg was pushing it for a double layer. I originally used snaps so the 2nd quilt could be removed but found I almost always used them together so I ended up sewing them together.

In NC, most of my camping season I should be good with one quilt. Made three because the two kids are getting into hammocks too and needed insulation. So with needing three pieces I had to go the lower budget row.
So sewing two quilts together defeats that purpose for me.
The way I got to ~30 was a short sleeve tee, long sleeve tee, 650 EB down jacket, thermal underwear, and insulated running pants. Wool socks on the feet.
I've learned that to be comfy at 30, I'll need to double up the under quilt which means I'll need to use my larger 90L pack. My 55L pack won't fit it all.
Someday I'll graduate to more compressible down options.
Here is my setup last week. It was a tight fit but right next to a wonderful sounding stream. Some of the best sleep I've had in a long time. Although I wonder if the running water prompted additional trips to the trees?

Good for you Shaw - DIY is a lot of fun and educational. I have an older EB down throw (at least 10 yrs old - mystery material with the 6 inch squares) I use it mostly for a summer TQ or UQ. 55F is a comfortable low for me. I have used it in the winter inside my sleeping bag to boost it's temp range and also inside my UQ to boost it's range. Surprisingly it adds about 20F and is quite comfortable.
