    Dolly Sods water filtering

I'm heading out here soon and wondered what the water is like. I heard some of the smaller feeder streams can be almost red from iron and hard on filters. Is everything else good for filtering? Or should I save myself the hassle and plan on burning up my neglected supply of chlorine dioxide tablets instead?

We'll be a little below freezing at night, so sleeping with the filter is no problem. But if daytime temps don't climb much I may decide to skip the filter anyway.

I've been there at least 3 times and never had an issue with my sawyer filters. I always use them even when the temp is below freezing at night and never ran into a problem.

OK thanks. I typically use a gravity filter after sorta giving up on the sawyer, but after having good luck with the mini on my last trip I may take it along. I also have a lightly used regular sawyer squeeze so even better.

I was just there a few weeks ago, and the feeder streams were pretty low and scuzzy. The larger parts weren't too bad, used my sawyer, and from my experience the water is nearly always pretty 'red' there. Have a great time!

Yeah it's been dry down there. Maybe I'll get lucky with 2' of fresh snow

I was there twice this pay summer. I used both a Sawyer squeeze and Platypus gravity without issue.

I've never had an issue. There are so many cross streams another one comes up soon enough if you come across one that is a little sketchy.

Two of my buddies was just there last week, chris from liteaf and scott from motivated by mountains. There was apparently a lot of deep mud there so definitely prepare for that. Apparently there was enough good water out there

When isn’t there a lot of deep mud at Dolly Sods?

If you can hit it after freezing but before snow, if you care about that. It's a delicate balance. Some trails are notorious for being muddy and some people don't plan for that and just go for it. There's enough other spots so I don't mind passing on those. Plus the current drought helps some.
