How I adjust for less hammock

When I bought my HG UQ, I had the suspension made for my 12' hammock which is my primary camping sleep system. Last night I wanted to sleep in my Hammock Bliss which is only 10' so I had to figure out how to suspend the UQ so it would fit. I know I could've just tied a knot in the suspension lines but I really didn't want to do that. Then I thought of these little name badge clips I always keep in my camp kit for hanging clothes and light weight items and bingo, problem solved. Since I use whoopie slings on all my hammocks, this allows me to use my UQ on all of them regardless of size.

The LL3's are only on the secondary. I suppose if you really tighten them enough, the primary will go slack and the secondary would sort of "become" the primary. Never tried that.

I've never needed to adjust an UQ suspension like this for a shorter hammock, but in fiddling around, I found the simplest thing to do was just pull one end of the primary farther through the S-biner and effectively shorten it by tying a new overhand knot. Some UQ's have a cordlock at one end of the primary to make these sort of adjustments even easier - which is a simple mod one could add to their HG quilt suspension.

Agreed. The secondary isn't a sufficient fix for shortening the primary. You want that UQ tight against your body. Forcing the secondary to do that is likely going to cause issues. May get away with it a few times but not something I would count on.

OP's solution is pretty simple and clever, too, though. Does that clip hold if it rains? If the clip fails, does the quilt fall on the ground? If so, running the whoopie through the S-biner in addition to using the badge clip as shown should prevent that possibility.

Another option may be to use a prussik knot. Easy to adjust to proper length and then tighten. My favorite cordage for this is old fly line, which is braided dacron, covered in supple plastic. The fly line really grabs whatever it is prussiked to. In addition it is compact and extremely durable. If you dont have any, go to your nearest fly shop and ask for some old line. They usually have tons of it laying around.

You could also try tying a loop in the UQ suspension to shorten it up. That’s what I do.

Never really thought it through, but I have dog bones on all my hammocks. I clip on at the gather normally, but for my wife and daughter's shorter hammocks I clip on the end of the dog bone. I guess between the ends of the dog bones on theirs is close enough to gather to gather length on my XLC that it worked and I never paid it any attention. Love the badge holder idea for other purposes. May drop 1 or 2 of those in my kit. If that was a common thing, I think I would just add prusiks to my whoopies at the right length and leave them there. Still, very nifty solution.

Sqidmark used to shorten the primary suspension permanently and had a mini ucr on the end that he used to adjust the primary tension. I never tried it, but I saw it in action and it was neat.
