    There is indeed a lot to learn, but everyone who goes out and puts in the time to practice learns very quickly. As long as you don’t break the cardinal rule – always tell someone where you (or your group) plan to be – then you will have very little to worry about. Your survival instinct will pick up any slack and won’t let you forget about it next time!

    Good advice. Everybody needs a good practice area that is either a car camp or a place that is about 1/2 hr fairly easy walk back to the car.

    And don't do trips only in nice weather. Rain, wind, cold and snow will tell you a lot more about your gear and yourself, and gradually you'll feel better about venturing farther and farther into the woods. Once you develop the skill set to master—or at least comfortably cope—with all those conditions on a multi-night trip, you'll be ready for the Big Trip.
