    Diy question

Hello, I'm pretty green at all this. I've been wanting to make my own hammock for some time. I'm looking to make a GE. Is there any info on of it's a good idea to cat cut the ends before you gather them? What about a car cut on the sides? Thank you for your help.

You do not need catenary cuts on a hammock.

If this is your first hammock, keep it simple: Cut a perfectly rectangular piece of fabric, hem all 4 sides, then fold the short ends over and triple stitch to form a channel for the suspension. That's it.

If you want to experiment with different gathering techniques, I would recommend whipping instead of sewing. Then you can undo/redo the whipping until you find what interests you.

    I’ve never sewn hammocks
If you want 11x5 finished size
Some allowance in length and width for hems and channels?

Thank you for all your help, I'll try a simple rectangle. I'll send a pic if I can.

I just sewed my first two hammocks a week ago. Super easy. Ordered 12' fabric blanks, thread, and 7/64 amsteel from Dutchware. The fabric measured out at 12'4 so I trimmed off 8". Hemmed the sides and channels with double folds and ended up with a finished size of 11' x 58". Used the channel to whip the ends and then hung the hammocks with continuous loops held in place by whippings. I have to admit that for an extra $15 to $17 more (depending on the fabric), having Dutchware sew it probably made more sense. But I wanted the experience and sanctification as well as the ability to play with the length. They turned out great! With kevlar straps and becket, I'm super tickled it comes in at 10 oz, for a full 11' hammock.

    This. K.I.S.S.

For your first hammock, if I were you, I'd go with the taffeta tablecloth. And since I am me, that is exactly what I did myself. Whipped ends with an amsteel continuous loop. I did the "W" whipped gather...and I like it, but I'm still testing it out.

SimplyLightDesigns has a hammock with CAT cut sides. There is nothing wrong with the hammock and many like the weight savings and less nylon to block a view. But that cat cut creates a very "hard" edge that I could feel behind my knees whenever I got in/out of the hammock. I went back to the standard shape GE with softer edges.
In order to see what few have seen, you must go where few have gone. And DO what few have done.
