VA-> Grayson Highland / Mt Rogers

Grayson Highlands once again serving up equal parts beauty and sublime power as the wind blew from 5 directions under the moonlight. Thank you old friend.

And thank you Chappy for inviting me to go.

Another great trip report, Paul. Thanks for giving us a look.

I love this area. Thomas Knob can get a little crowded sometimes, but there are a lot of great places to stay along the AT and several options for loops. I like to stay around Old Orchard because it is less traveled (except for when the thru hiker bubble comes though) and a very peaceful spot. I guess most people want the views going up to Mount Rogers.

I need to check that out. We did a side trip on Saturday night and hung over near Whitetop Mountain.

Thanks for sharing, always enjoy your reports and videos. Looks like you had a decent amount of fall colors too! That was a lot of cattle! I’ve seen them out there several times but never that many at once.

Looks like a perfect time to be there, Tall Paul. I'm about due to head back out there...now that it's cooled off. Where do you park and have you heard of problems with break-ins? Thanks

We spent two nights - the first parking near Whitetop Mtn. We also drove by Elk Garden - lots of cars there. We then drove over to Grayson State Park for the 2nd night.

The break-in issues I had heard of were all old reports. Curious how it will be with more overflow going to these alternate areas.
The other option I’ve heard of but never some are the driving up to Scales (4WD?) or hiking south on the AT from near the Grindstone campground.

Lots of folks on horseback - it looked like they were gathering cattle together but can’t say for sure. Definitely the most I’ve seen there.

We bumped into a thru hiker who was showing his girlfriend ? where he slept in the Wise shelter the year before. Def one of his favorite spots as well.
