I finally got out to experience the Superior hiking Trail this past weekend. I have dreamt about it since 1st watching Shug's videos 6 or 7 yrs ago. It was fun to see some of the places in person I have only seen on Youtube for so long.
We arrived at the Oberg Mountain parking area Saturday evening around 8 pm. It was dark and raining. The Onion River camp site was just a quick .4 miles in so we got to camp quickly and set up in the rain.
Sunday morning we were treated with a beautiful sunrise shining on to view of Leveaux Mtn. Ate a quick breakfast and began our 14 mile day to the Cross River Sites.
Along the way we traveled up and over Carlton Peak, the highest point on the North Shore of Minnesota. It stretched our lungs a little. Glad we had fresh legs for it.
Here is my hiking partner atop Carlton overlooking Lake Superior"
After we descended Carlton we made our way through temperance River State Park. What beautiful scenery!! I could have sat and watched the rapids all day.

After we traversed the Temperance area we made our way towards the Cross River sites. By this time we had put in around 11-12 miles and we're starting to feel the trail. The trail started to ascend again. We whined a little bit through that. Those BIG steps up the rocks turned our legs in pure jelly. We pushed through and made it to camp and, boy, was it worth the walk! Slept soundly to the roar of the Cross River that night.
Monday we hiked through Boney Meadow
We made camp Monday afternoon at the Sugarloaf site. It isn't much a hammock site but I found a spot that worked. Pretty sunset over the pond and slept to the loons and beaver splashing nearby. Tuesday we had a short one mile hike out to one of the cars we had left...and a couple of ice cold beers in the cooler.
Hard put into words how fun this trip was. An absolute blast!
