    Mississippian looking for spots

Anybody in Mississippi mind telling me a good place to first try out all my gear when it comes in? I am thinking just going out in Camp Shelby and giving it a go, but they currently have a lot of training going on. I am in Hattiesburg, wouldn't mind driving 1 to 2 hours for a secluded place to learn how to hang and adjust everything out. Just don't want to be around people and fall flat on my butt if I do something wrong. As I have only one tree in my yard. Thanks for reading.

Airey Lake in Saucier has lots of trees and it’s free. The South Mississippi hang was there last year and should be again soon. But others will likely be willing to join you on any sort of outing. We like hanging and sharing info!

The ones close to you are Janice Landing or Fairley Bridge Landing both are free to hang.

Black creek trail runs right through there. Nice easy trail plenty of good water to make coffee with. Love that area.

I like Clear Springs over in Meadville, Homochitto National Forest. Plenty of trees, dispersed camping, and hiking trails. . Probably about 2 hrs from you.

Ditto Airey Lake in Saucier area and Black Creek Trail in Brooklyn area. Airey Lake has drive up camping, water, and a RR. This time of year there might be scout troops but the Tuxachanie Trail goes off in two directions so you could hike to a more secluded spot if you preferred. The Black Creek Trail is 40 miles long. There are many access roads where you can park, hike in a short distance, and then set up camp. Trees are everywhere along the trail. 10 miles of the trail is in a designated wilderness area. You could park on Melvin Breland Road on the northeast corner of the wilderness section, hike in 3/4 of a mile and set up camp by Mill Creek in the wilderness area. The road is gravel. I have left my car there several times. Both of these suggestions are in the Desota National Forest. Their office is located in Wiggins. Their phone number is (601) 528-6160. You can contact them for maps. They do charge for them, but they have some free brochures. Google is not a good source for maps of either trail. In fact, the Google trail maps are extremely inaccurate and will have you looking for trail miles from the actual location. Oh, wear blaze orange and have some visible at your camp! Have fun and hope you come to the Airey gathering when we get it organized!
