First solo backpacking trip (superior hiking trail)

I just got back from my first backpacking trip, which was a solo trip on the Superior Hiking Trail. My plan was to start at the Oberg Mt trailhead on Saturday and hike to west rollins creek, but it was pouring that day, so I waited until Sunday to leave. I got to the trail head around 1:00 and there were cars lining the road into the parking lot, but I was lucky to find a spot in the lot. There were easily 50 cars, likely more. Seems they were all day hikers going on the Oberg mountain loop though.

The trail to west rollings creek was rocky, rooty and quite muddy, so instead of taking in the view I had to pay close attention to walking. One thing I noticed right away was there are these strange muscles that connect to my hip that I have apparently never exercised, as they starting making themselves know in short order I thought the hike was 2.75 miles and was surprised to arrived after only 50 minutes. As I was about halfway through setting up my hammock a through hiker (male) entered camp and surveyed the situation for a good tent spot. It was better here than at the east site, so he joined my first "solo" camp Not one hour or so later another solo hiker came and joined us also (female also a ground dweller), so it was a nice little gathering.

We all went to bed early and gradually joined each other for breakfast, before long both were off in opposite direction. My second day consisted of hiking back to oberg mountain and doing the loop, where I had lunch (great view) By the time I got down from oberg and started the trip back to camp, my knees were complaining and my dogs were barking. As I picked my way along at a middle aged man's pace, I heard two young guys coming behind, and I can say they blew passed me a double my speed as the casually talked about some role playing card game. I was happy to make it back to camp, where I had dinner and then hit the sack.

I did pack along a trail camera to setup in camp, hoping to see any hairy creatures that entered sector 7 at night (and day) but not a single one was caught. I did have ruffed grouse hanging around today though.

Nice. I know that camp well.
Chaga is only good on live trees. Usually more knotty looking than shroomy looking...https://images.search.yahoo.com/sear...v-web&fr=aaplw

Whew! Reminds me about the "are the woods becoming more crowded?" thread.

I love seeing the fall colors up north!

I do agree with you from the other thread 100% but the fall color crowd up here has always been pretty healthy.

Congrats on your first solo fr0sty, it is a freeing experience.

Nice job - Congrats on getting your first solo under your belt! I just did mine in VT the week before.

Your tree bark pics were interesting and cool. Thanks for sharing!

Funny, though, as many cars that were up there the only time we really saw anyone was around Temperance falls/bridge area. Otherwise we had the trail mostly to ourselves. We were kind of groaning when we pulled in that it was going to be like a KOA campground up there but were pleasantly surprised.
