Question Why is postage to the uk so expensive

    Hi All
I'm looking at getting a better hammock from cottage vendors that are based in the states but its looking like $80 just for shipping which is putting most hammocks I like way out of my price range has any one got any ideas how I could cut this cost down I am new to hammocks and I'm currently using an amazon cheap hammock just to see if I would like it and guess what I love it
    Regards
    Jonathan
(ps. I know people have to be paid for there services but that seems excessive )

Did you ever order from dutchwaregear.com? Their international shipping rates are very fair.

    Look into a Parcel forwarder.
Single parcels can be sent or consolidate a few items into a single parcel.
I use one to get hammock gear to Australia.
Mountain views are good for the soul....& getting to them is good for my waistline.

is there a significant difference in postage price to do this are there companies or would it be an individual I'm not sure how it all works are there any guarantees that the wont disappear with the item after spending £200-£300

I have been looking at two hammocks one of which is by Dutch the other by dream still very undecided on which one to go for and I believe Dutch quote delivery when you place the order I have been looking at other vendors for gadgets and accessories and the postage seems excessive for them as well but unfortunately here in Scotland/UK we don't have anywhere that sells much to do with hammocks so have to order internationally

They're large businesses, free to join, give you a US postal address within their depot, get a choice of delivery companies & postage rates + insurance.
Faster delivery 3-5 days = more expensive
    Slower delivery = less expensive.

Apparently you have to pay 20% import duty on anything over £15 from the US to the UK. Got caught by that one on a firebox, cost me more in postage, duty and post office admin fee than the item cost.

I have only got stuff from wish eBay and amazon and never had anything like that
I looked into the parcel forwarder and they didn't say anything about it (not that I was looking for it )but I will find out

Have you looked at Simply Light Designs for your hammock? It's pretty much a one man shop, but Jared is impossibly fast at building your item to order and shipping it out. Check his subforum here and you'll see dozens of stories to attest to this. He quotes international shipping at checkout and mentions discounted international shipping.
