    UQ Temp Rating Hyperbole-Free

I am brand spanking new to hammock camping. I've spent a couple of nights out using a Thermarest pad, and can easily see the value of having an UQ rather than trying to surf on the pad. I'm not in a particular rush, but I also see there are some sales being offered and don't want to miss an opportunity to get an essential bit of kit at a cost savings, if possible. I'm in the Northeast and was considering a 20 degree UQ to start with since we are in the fall.

I have various sleeping bags and a 40 degree quilt from ground camping. I know that some vendors can be prone to hyperbole when estimating the temperature range of their products. For example my 40 degree quilt is really only good to about 45-50 and the company has taken some gruff about being too generous with their ratings. I'd like to avoid this when purchasing the UQ.

Where should I be looking in terms of vendors? And if this is a sensitive topic (I used the search feature and did not find a match) please feel free to PM me. Yes, I know the rating is only the starting point, that different people sleep differently etc.

    Thanks
    Bob

Most if not all cottage vendors quilt offerings are true to temp. I own Hammock Gear and LocoLibre and I'm a very cold sleeper and both of these companies ratings seem just right for me. There's also Warbonnet Outdoors as well as others but any of these manufactures are reliable.

Thank you. If I had spent 30 minutes doing some background checking on my current quilt I would have chosen differently at the time. Learned from my mistake!

Yeah, I think the vendors you find here use comfort ratings instead of survival ratings. I've used my 40F set into the low 40s with no issue other than getting the UQ draft collar dialed in.

You can depend on the cottage vendors here on the forum quoting temperature ratings that the vast majority would be comfortable at. The big name brands often quote survival temp and big box stores just make up a random number, LOL. Our vendors are small time makers who are actually known by fellow members and there sales depend solely on word of mouth reputation. Welcome to life off the ground where expectations are a little higher.

Lots of options from the cottage vendors that will be mentioned here I’m sure but I can tell you my experience. I sleep cold and have found my Hammockgear 0, 20, and 40 to be spot on maybe even a bit warmer than advertised.

With most of the cottage vendors listed on the forum, you can email them and or call them to get answers to your questions. You will often find at least one of the vendors at many of the hangs around the country. Remember that the cottage vendor shops do not have dedicated staff just to answer the phone or reply to your emails so be patient.

JRB has been conservatively rated in my experience, as well as the other vendors all ready mentioned. My JRB MW3(rated about 20F I believe) UQ kept me nice and warm at 25F used on a JRB bridge, with no other layers worn than cotton PJs and a JRB hood, with a JRB 20F Sniveller on top. I am certain I could have gone lower, even without adding layers or VBs. I have been quite warm in the JRB MW4 0F rated UQ at 10F, no doubt I could have gone lower.

I have also had very good results with the original CS version of he WB Yeti, so I figure it would be as good or better with the down version.

Set them up correctly and make sure to migrate the down.
Every vendor I have used from this site plus my DIY ones have done their job.
