Another Reason to Love Hammock Camping

The pictures really tell the story, but...My son and I made a quick trip to South Dakota over Labor Day weekend. It would have been a 10 hour drive if we drove straight through, but we got a late start on Friday afternoon and decided to pull over in O'Neill, NE to spend the night. I saw they had a free city camp ground and we stop there to see if we could hang our hammocks in one of the tent camping spots. Well, we got ourselves all setup up right as it started to rain. It was a pretty good storm with lots of thunder and lightning along with tons of rain. We found out pretty quickly that these were not very good tent site locations!

My gear: WB Superfly, WB Eldorado, HG 40 Phoenix, lightweight blanket, 2QZQ UQP XL
Sons gear: Yukon Outfitters Walkabout, WB XLC, CDT for both top and underquilt

My Superfly was pitch high to give some airflow, but I ended up having to get out in the rain to pitch it lower due to the wind and splashing from the rain hitting the growing pond we were hanging over. I was also thankful that I had brought my UQP due to the blowing rain and splashing. My son found out that it would have been nice to have his Kelty Noah 9' rainfly over the smaller Yukon Outfitters Walkabout rainfly; however, he hung his hammock tight to the tarp and it stayed dry. The only issue was splashing onto his UQ and that would have been okay as well if his father was willing to give up his UQP, but I decide my comfort and protection of my HG UQ was more important then his comfort and protection of his CDT UQ.

Dang! That site is New Orleans style. Reminds me of the guy yelling from his porch after Katrina "PUT THE PUMPS ON!"

This is why I gave up on tents....no more waking up in a flood zone...site selection is also more critical with tents, but still important for hammock users.

Yeah, he had his running shoes under his hammock and they ended up floating away. When I got up that morning they were floating about 15' from his spot.

...I should add that he had them sitting on a heavy duty emergency blanket that he was using as a ground cloth and the whole thing had floated away.

In the 2nd pic...those folks in the tent. How'd they do? Or did they bail before the storm?

I'm not sure. The tent was on a little higher ground, but still looked soaked. They didn't have a vehicle and appeared to be kind of living out of the tent. I know they started off in it that night, but we were all packed up and gone before I saw anyone over there in the morning.
