Smaller tarps out this weekend.

Had a couple of smaller tarps out this weekend. The edge and the Minifly. I had to relocate into a brushier area and the smaller footprint came in handy. Another thumbs up for smaller tarps! My larger tarp would have required more work to push back the briars.

Love my Superfly but that minifly tempts me every time I look at it.

Looks good! I'm tempted to go with my Superfly this week after getting soaked a couple trips ago. But I should be good with the Thunderfly.

I would think the thunder would be fine. That's my large tarp. What were you using when you got wet?

I got cocky with the 100% dry forecast and took the Mamajamba. A storm came in and soaked me from all 4 sides, obviously the open ends the most.

How low did you pitch it? Worst storm I was in I was way low and tight and no issues with the edge. Have to make sure tarp is low agains you and knots of hammock about 2 to 3 inches below ridge of tarp. Sides pulled to drastic A frame.

Yeah I saw it coming so I put it low as possible and a steep A frame.

One of those nice 80° days. 0% chance of rain. Then I was barely able to get some cell service to update the forecast: 30% scattered storms. Then I could just smell it coming an hour later. Hunkered down and watched it blow in from across the lake. How many square feet are open on a hex tarp? Without doing the math, I'm guessing something like 10 square ft? That's a lot of unprotected space, times 2 when the wind swirls and gets you from both sides.

Got to a point where I was just standing naked, holding my hammock up towards the top to ride it out. Most everything else packed away in drybags, soaked, but keeping things inside dry.

I'm pretty sure my Superfly would have not been an issue at all.

What I do in bad storms is drop the hammock tarp where it is basically a few inches from my hammock when I'm in it and my edge was about 10" from the ground. I basically have to side against the tarp itself to get in the hammock and once in it my weight lowers the hammock away from the tarp. A mamajama should almost be able to touch the ground with you in the hammock. Maybe do a dry run and see how tight you can get the tarp.
