    Question Reducing Tarp Raindrop Noise

Last time I was out, it rained all night. I feel like I can hear every single raindrop on the tarp like a strike on a drum. Trees dripping melting snow is even worse.

Is there a method or material to make a tarp go from bum-bum-bum to pitter-patter in the rain?

I’m using a Warbonnet Edge silnylon hex tarp.

Agreed on both counts. Only other thing I could think of would be to go with a heavy duck cloth tarp. Not something I would want to pack around, but if you hang out of your car it might be an option. It doesn't kill the sound but it lightens it and has a deeper (more soothing?) tone than the higher pitched "plink plink" on a thin synth fabric.

If this bothers you with silnylon, never consider Spinnaker or Dyneema (Cuben) tarps as they amplify the sound. I have both, but love to hear the rain.

Earplugs, and maybe add some melatonin.

I also like the sound... it reminds me that I'm staying warm and dry under 7 ounces of shelter... pretty comforting!

WHY would you want to minimize that sweet music?

Seriously, I think nylon is the least percussive of the materials. My poly tarps sing, but I like it.

I wonder if the tarp is strung with less tension that it would absorb more of the energy of the rain drop and make less sound?

    Reducing Tarp Raindrop Noise

Love that sound - recorded it on my phone to play at school when my middle school students stress me out.

Like Cabmanhang said, less tight. Also you can change the steepness of the pitch into more of an "A" frame. The angle is higher and lessens the sound of raindrops.

You can also try using noseeum bug netting a few inches above the tarp to break the drops before impact with the tarp.
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you

I camped this past weekend in a Lowe's 10x12 green/brown poly tarp to see if I liked the coverage of a 10x12 sized tarp, it rained the whole weekend! I couldn't hear myself think, after awhile it got pretty annoying and I almost picked up and went home, my Etowah 10x10 urethane coated tarp is nice under rainstorms for comparison, that poly tarp was friggin' torture!

I'm now going to invest in a 10x12 silpoly, I hope the sound of raindrops is comparable to my urethane coated Etowah!
