    Holy Hot Hammocking!

I thought it was supposed to be cooler in the mountains. I guess Ocoee, TN isn’t high enough to follow that plan, but I was hoping it would be cooler than Birmingham, AL. NOPE. Still about 90* at bedtime on Friday night. No bug net, no covers, and under quilt pulled to the side, and it was still stifling.

I’ve also discovered that, after sleeping full time in my big Brazilian Hammock, my little ENO single, that has served my short stature so well, is no longer doable. Especially in the heat.

I went to the Ocoee Championship Races (my first experience watching whitewater activity) and expected the first wonderful camping event of the season. I spent time “waving” my quilt on the side of me to generate a breeze under me. That worked a bit. A cool rag on my face helped some, too.

I can’t wait til it cools off down here...and I can get a new, bigger, hammock.

Yep, it's hard this time of year in the south. We've been hammock-less for months and we are chomping at the bit to get out. My advice don't do it unless you head high in the Smokes. This is especially true this year where we've just had our hottest two weeks of the summer in mid September. Hanging weather will eventually get here but it's simply way to hot and humid to try to get sleep in a hammock in the south. The good news is our hanging season is just around the corner mid October till May will be nice hanging weather.

I hear you! That's why I moved this year from South Florida to the White Mountains of New Hampshire.

I camp two or three weekends a month from October to April. I camp one week in July but its only because I am committed to setting a good example for a bunch of scouts (I still get a fan though!). Other than that it has to be a pretty special occasion for me to camp outdoors in the summer in NC.

Who would have thought the second weekend in September would still be the hottest part of the Summer?
The big thing I learned is that small hammocks (ENO single) are claustrophobic in stifling heat. It's time for a new Hammock. The big question is which one?
I've looked at the trail lair, the Dream hammocks, and others. I'm leaning toward symmetrical, rather than dedicated lay, because I side sleep and switch sides. Oh, the choices!

Good lord I don't know which is worse a second summer like that or the constant drone in our heads up north about this time of year "Winter is coming, winter is coming" :P
Once you're lost in twilight's blue, you don't find your way, the way finds you.

Come on out to Summer's Last Gasp Hang with us in Ocala last weekend in September. Great weather for camping there. Even if the city is in the 90's, Hidden Pond is almost always in the lower 70's at bed time.

If you like the shorter hammocks like the ENO, and for hot hanging temps, you can use a bridge hammock like WBRR. The lower walls make for catching a better breeze as well as good views from both sides of the hammock.
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you
