Rope Splicing Question?

I want to start rope splicing to make whoopie slings, UCRs, etc., but am not sure where to start. What do I need to begin rope splicing? (I am on a pretty restrictive budget, so cheaper options are better.)

YouTube is your friend. You can use what you have such as wire for splicing or purchase tools as you go along.

Thanks! I had used YouTube (Shug's channel) for hammock stuff, but didn't think to look at it for splicing stuff. Also, what is a brand/type of cordage you recommend?

You do not need any real special equipment. A sharp knife to cut tapers, a wood plank to cut on. I use a 20 gauge piece of brass wire folded over as my FID. Floral wire or any other small gauge wire will do. For Zing-it I use a plastic canvas needle. Ruler or tape measure and a Pair of pliers can sometimes help.

I'd say the biggest for load bearing is Amsteel and Spectra. For guylines and ridgelines, Zing It or Lash It.

What is/how to taper a splice? I am having trouble finding instructioons on this.

It just means to cut the last ~1-2" of rope at a slant so that the diameter of the rope "feathers out". Otherwise it creates a noticeable bump (like a snake that just swallowed a gerbil)

The simplest way is to unbraid 3/4 of an inch and spread the 8 or 12 strands out and cut a long angle. I like to use a ceramic knife from walmart for a couple of bucks, they also have the loop turners there for a few bucks.

I do not have any splicing video as my splicing time was short lived.
Now I just purchase whoopie slings and the likes.
