I wonder if it was just a bad batch of CLs. Its good to know that most of you haven't had this problem and I can continue hammock camping. I ordered some 1/8 ones from dutchware so that should give me some confidence.
I really wish someone was videotaping this incident. You hear a crash followed by an expletive. Then, I couldn't find the zippers for the bugnet. I couldn't find my headlamp either so I was struggling in the dark. LOL.

hmmm.... Again looks like it didn't break but pulled out and, once again, maybe a bad/incorrect Brummel.

    +1

Also you can make them a lot shorter if you want. Most of the pre-made CLs I have seen are unnecessarily long, which means some tighter hanging spots cannot be used. Or at least not without some impromptu inventive rigging.

To the OP, you could most likely reuse this same piece of Amsteel and just re-splice the CL yourself, following the correct technique as shown in many tutorials and Youtube videos. Fear not, these (properly spliced) CL's have been holding countless hammock hangers reliably for many years.

One would think the people that do this for a living would be better at it than me.

Except when you consider the amount of CLs these vendors have to make. I can imagine that it becomes so rote that every once in a while, a step gets messed up. When you make them yourself, you're usually only making one or two pairs, and you'll take more time to ensure everything is done correctly.

If that's the whole piece of Amsteel, I too would think it just came apart. If this is the case, seems like a locked Brummel wasn't used. Also, the ends were not tapered. The tapering helps in the transition from filled line to single line to keep the strength at its highest.

Dutch holds a pretty good CL making class at some of the hangs that he attends as a Vendor. He held a great one at HangCon 2018. I love my DIY CLs and have the utmost confidence in them. Remake the CL's if you know how or watch a few vids on YT. Not that hard and a great feeling you use your own work.
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you

Probably best to start with new amsteel
Sometimes commercial items are made using least amount of material possible.
Watch several video tutorials on continuous loops
    Also get Grog Knot app
Duplicate Grog Sling except that you need ends longer to have longer splice.
Knot video tutorials will give good measurements for all markings and steps in your continuous loop
Or send vendor a picture and ask for another set of continuous loops

Thanks for posting your issue here, and hopefully you weren't banged up too much.

When things go wrong in a hammock, it seems to go REALLY wrong. Not necessarily funny at the time, but make for great stories later on. My last 'incident' in the hammock involved so many colorful words, I'm glad there weren't any women or children nearby.
