    Quilt options

I知 new to hammock camping and am looking to purchase my first set of quilts. I live in Kentucky and most of my backpacking is in the the surrounding region. My low temps can get into the mid 20s/30s but can also go up to the point of needing no insulation. I知 trying to get by with purchasing one set of quilts for now. So here is what I知 thinking.

I知 considering purchasing a 20F underquilt with a 40F top quilt. My thinking is that the underquilt can get me down to the cold temps but can be vented in warmer months. And the top quilt could be used into a little warmer weather as well plus I already own a good 32F mummy bag that I like so I thought I could use that to help layer if ever expecting really cold temps.

    Any suggestion? Thanks!

This question has been asked many times on this forum and while we all have our varying opinions the answer nearly always centers around the 20ー set. Go for the 20's and you can vent. This also depends on when you do most of your hanging. For me the 20ー was a good starter set because I only hang in late fall/winter/early spring where temps will be lows in the 20 -30's and highs in the 50-70's. Having done this for a while I'd recommend getting a 20ー set and that should do you till you get this itch to buy more stuff.

Just as a point of reference I also have a 0ー set and a 60ー set for summer but hanging in summer in Alabama just isn't worth the trip.

I agree with TrailSlug. I have a 20d set for my WBRR that I use in the spring and fall for my trips in the Adirondacks. I go to a converted Costco down blanket UQ and a Pine Down Blanket TQ in the summer. Of course I adjust my sleepwear as well.

Yes, that should work, but obviously also depends on your preferences. I'm a 3-season camper and use a 0ー underquilt because I'm very susceptible to cold from below. But I use a 20ー sleeping bag for top insulation. That works perfectly for me.

Thanks everyone for the input. I think I am going to go with the 20d set. Then possibly get a warmer set later.

    20コ is a good choice .
You can always vent the UQ if needed.
