Are you sure that this is a bear? Raccoons also leave similar marks, and they also like to be present on peoples property, they are looking for food. I will recommend you to make your presence well know, on your property, in this case the animal will know that someone is living here, and they will be aware. Moreover, I will also recommend you to call a raccoon removal company. In situations like that you better leave this job to professionals, they know for sure what to do. Hope my message will be useful for you.

For field, work, or firewood cutting pants I learned to 'shag' the cuff either by cutting off or undoing the hem. And usually shorter than normal. That way if you get hung up on something like a branch staub the pants will rip through the cuff instead of hanging up and dumping one's self upon my head. My hiking or backpacking pants are usually synthetic materials from one of the fancy big name companies purchased at the thrift store or a discount source and hems are intact.

Bear spray should be sufficient, but I'd be more worried about sasquaches and UFO's!

Here is a pretty good link on Mountain Lions here in Colorado. I definitely wouldn't mess with this. Establish your area and assert your presence at least.

My dad is a wildlife biologist and his opinion was you will want a perimeter defense up when you hang. Lines stung up with something on the line that will bang or make noise or light up if tripped. If the cat trips the perimeter while you are there you are in trouble. A curious cat is very dangerous.

I say enjoy it to the fullest and feel lucky if you spot the track-maker.

Bear spray, a whistle, an air horn, a strobe all work as more "active" means to accompany your standard best practices on keeping a clean camp and food storage. Unless you're an experienced firearms user or intend to put in the time to become one, that option is more trouble than it's worth.
