Folks are all over the spectrum. My top quilt is a 20deg zipper / drawstring UGQ Bandit. My sockless feet get hot so the drawstring works well. At about 10 degrees the drawstring gets closed. I never would have guessed this before buying this - my first - top quilt. Glad I saved the coins and didn’t go with the sewn footbox.

I have a similar experience with my European Cumulus Quilt 350 (a ~20deg quilt). It has a zippered footbox plus a drawstring, but it also has draft tubes next to the drawstring and the zipper. I've never had problems with my feet being too cold, but I really appreciate the possibility to loosen the drawstring a little if my feet get too hot (I also sleep without socks). But I admit that things would probably be different when you get to really cold conditions.

I have the WB Diamondback 20 deg with zippered footbox. I just got back from my very first backpacking trip. Temps went down 22 deg-29 deg one night. I had a pair of wool socks on and covered the footbox with my rain jacket to keep condensation off my zippered footbox. I was warm and toasty all night. Other night went from 32 deg to 34. Did the same thing. Love my top quilt!

    Sewn vs. Zippered footbox

However, reading these reviews about zippered footboxes, I now have a new concern. HHHMMM. I am very clausterphobic and can't stand mummybags b/c I can't move my feet around. So for my hammock camping I decided to go zipper footbox in case I feel closed in, I have the option to unzip. Also, I sleep cold and have to have a zero degree bag for a 4 season bag. We are starting to plan for the AT and starting to collect gear. What is your thought about being closed in at the footbox area? Does it feel like a mummybag? My other thought is to get down booties to keep my feet warm and to get the extra "heatbox" that Loco Libre and OGQ offer. Any help anyone can give on making this purchase is desperately needed.
Sounds like you should ask UGQ or LLG to put less of a taper on the footbox. I had a no taper UGQ Bandit TQ for a while and it did add some comfort for sure, but I think it was too much for a hammock. It was awesome for a pad or mattress though! And yet I do sometimes feel like standard TQ’s are a bit constrictive in the way you mentioned. I believe something in the middle, like a half taper would be worth trying.

In other news, UGQ recently added snaps to their zippered TQ Bandits for sealing up that notorious hole. Looks like a good idea.

In case you didn't catch this other thread, there's a small design update for zippered/drawstring footbox on UGQ Bandit:

(Oops, didn't notice that was also mentioned in previous post.)
