Swing Set for Kids / Hammock Stand for Dad

We have recently moved a new house and left behind a swing set that our kids loved and the perfect trees I used to hang my hammock. The new yard has some trees, but they really don’t work for hanging my hammock.

So, I got to thinking today that I might could kill two birds with one stone if I built a swing set frame that was long enough and strong enough to support me in a hammock as well.

There are kits like this on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Eastern-Jungl...dp/B003DK1RRE/. Or
I could probably build something without a kit. I’ve seen some posts on the forums about people using their kid’s swing sets this way, but want to be sure it’s safe before I go that route for myself.

So I guess I’m looking for opinions and advice of any kind. Whether that be, “Not a good idea.” Or, “Here’s how I’d do it.”

Also, I know I could build a stand specifically for hanging the hammock. BUT... that will score me no brownie points with the wife and just continue to confirm to her that I am crazy. And, I’ll still have to build/buy a swing set.

Anyway, thanks in advance for any help any of you can offer.

You can only dodge the "crazy" bullet so many times. Man up, and get it over with.

I built a swing Sert for my kids out of 6 X 8 pressure treated lumber. The top beam is 18 feet long. It hasn't been used as a swing set for years but is now my backyard hang spot. Probably be a swing set again for the grandkids someday. Must be over 20 years since I built it.

Seadug, thanks for the info. Did you build it in an a-frame configuration? Or did you concrete vertical posts into the ground? If it’s lasted 20 years it must be built right. Also, do you think 18 feet is about right or do you think shorter would be fine... both for swings and hammocks

    I did love this set-up:

This looks like a good idea, but it lasted all of five seconds in the gale force winds which followed, ripping my stakes out of the ground. In the end I had to tie the guy lines directly to the timber of the frame. The tarp was acting like a sail!

    Dog kennel tie-outs.

Next-door neighbours, the chooks. They were a bit confused, but not too traumatised by the experience.

Two good nights' sleep were had!
If I ever have enough space and access to some big tree trunks, this is what I would like to build

My repurposed swing set. I used to have 3 swings and a glider hanging from it. I think the length of the top beam is about right. I can hang my 12 winter haven tarp from the frame. Usually my suspension attaches just above the crosspiece on the a frame. The legs are set in the ground about 4 feet.

Like it, swing in the daytime, sway in the night time!

That’s pretty stout looking/sounding. I’m probably going to try to build something like that. Again, it will kill two birds with one stone.
