DIY toggles for marlin spike hitch

I think i read something about using aluminum arrows as toggles for their marlin hitch. Does anyone have any experience with this? How long do they need to be? Have been using Poly straps for years with a carabiner and marlin hitch and have recently shortened the straps to 5 feet and purchased whoopie slings?

3" seems about right. Ive used al. arrows before but I prefer something a bit more beefy..... no reason I just like a thicker toggle.

Aluminum Slurpee straws from 7- 11 work great.

You basically can use almost anything as a toggle. In the pic above, I used sawed off wooden tomato stakes. A carabiner is what I mostly use now.

You beat me to it. I cut each straw in three pieces and deburr the ends.

I went to Gander Mnt and got some carbon arrow shaft cut offs. They were just throwing them out so they were free for me. Cut them about 3-4 inches, drilled a hole in them and tied a loop with some mason line. Lark's headed that onto the loop of my tree straps. Don't have to worry about losing them and haven't had a failure in the four years I've been using them.

So oddly enough if anybody decides to do an internal pole MOD on their tarp you can buy just replacement tent poles off Amazon for a range of sizes (2 - 11'3" poles run $23 before shipping). These can then be cut down for an exact size for your tarp.

I have used the AL Arrow shaft toggles for 3 years now. They work great. I use 3" toggles and like other drilled a 1/8 hole near one end for a cord.
