Leaky ridge seam on a DCF tarp....

Last night I used my HG Palace for the first time since buying it from a member here last year. I've had it up previously, but never spend the night under it as far as I can remember. Hung in my backyard hammock lab last light and awoke around 2am to the sound of rain drops. I love sleeping under the tarp when it's raining so I just rolled over and nodded off.

The rain got really heavy so I got up to close the doors... which of course, didn't close fully because I had my normal wide pitch. That's for another post.

The good news is with the rain as hard as it was, I had no water issues from head, foot or sides.

The bad news is... There is a REALLY bad leak from the ridge seam. Dripping pretty bad. I had the choice of bailing to the house, but that would have been the wimpy thing to do. So I stayed. Fortunately I use a synthetic top quilt and even more fortunate that it was 73F, so I just let the water drip on my chest and went back to sleep.

I'm not sure of the best course of action. I can tape the seam the entire seam... I can tape the section where I think it is leaking from (hard to be sure given how water travels).. I can send it back to HG and let them resolve it.

Such are the risks of buying used.

    Any suggestions??

Taping versus silicone sealing a tarp?

I ask because I just used silicone seam sealer to fix the seams on a rain jacket. The adhesive on the factory-installed tape had worn out and the tape was hanging loose from the sewn ends. I'd hate to have that happen to a tarp.

Just don't want to going hit and miss. I examined the seam once everything was dry and I can't tell where it's infiltrating.

No seam sealing on a cuben fiber tarp.

Given this situation, I would send it to HG and let them work their magic.

If this is the case send it back to HG and let them fix it once and for all and soon before the hiking season hit's full stride.

In seven years, my Winter Palace has never leaked. I did try the ridgeline under the tarp for a brief moment when I first got it. However, the Zing-It was catching on the adhesive at the ridgeline where the two pieces of cuben fiber are taped together. I quickly gave up the idea of "ridgeline under the tarp."

Nevertheless, I've seen quite a few people run the ridgeline under the tarp. SilentOrpheus bought a used Palace last year that had quite a bit of wear on the ridgeline (probably from somebody running a ridgeline under the tarp). He sent it back to HG and they retaped the whole ridgeline.

I've seen other people who just do their own repairs with tape. JerzyBears had a couple of HG cuben fiber tarps that looked normal from afar, but when I got up close, I saw tape repairs everywhere. I'm not sure why they had so many repairs, but their tarps were still going strong.

I can only make feeble guess as to how the tarp was used and cared for prior buying it. Fruitless to try to figure it out.

I don't want to hack-job it. Best to let HG figure it out.

I've run my fingers across the taped seam and can't find anything. No question water was coming in at a rapid pace, but I can only say it was coming in 'about this spot'.

It does leave me a bit disheartened. I certainly haven't put any wear on it in the time I owned it so... Make of that what you will. Caveat Emptor.

Any idea how much HG charged to retape it?
