That’s exactly what I would do.
Step 1: run a quick thread between the two separated edges of the hole. This just gets it to join up and sit still while you work.
Step 2: tightly stitch the two edges together by going up through one edge and down through the other. This creates a spiral kind of stitch that binds it all together.
You will end up with something that looks like a black worm crawling on your bug mesh, but should function good as new. Easier and better looking than putting a patch on it.
