That’s exactly what I would do.

Step 1: run a quick thread between the two separated edges of the hole. This just gets it to join up and sit still while you work.

Step 2: tightly stitch the two edges together by going up through one edge and down through the other. This creates a spiral kind of stitch that binds it all together.

You will end up with something that looks like a black worm crawling on your bug mesh, but should function good as new. Easier and better looking than putting a patch on it.

    Thanks for the advice

Would you do this while the mesh is under a little tension (like with the hammock set up but the ridgeline not tight) or with everything loose (with the hammock not set up)?

Definitely you want this on a table or in your lap while you work.

If you have a needlepoint hoop set, it might hold it in a good position for working on.

Don't have one of those. But seems like a good idea. I think I know where I can borrow one. Thanks for the input

And of course we need a pic of the finished product - for quality control

oops, I may be too late, but I meant something more like this:

    darning.jpg

This way you are not bunching up the netting into a wad, but maintaining the overall shape/size of the fabric. Essentially you are recreating the netting using thread (except not as complicated!) I would spread the tear on a flat surface to maintain the shape, and yes, you may be putting thread across open space if the edges of the net do not meet! (Look up darning online if you need more help.)
