Question on Making a Multi Colored Hammock

Hey guys, I am just getting into the DIY gear game. I really like the look of the parachute nylon hammocks because of the cool color combinations they have. I was wondering if it is possible to sew together three strips of ripstop nylon to achieve a simmilar effect? Is there any downside to doing this? Thanks!

Some feel that the sewn seam is uncomfortable to lay on.

If you wanted to avoid the "uncomfortable seams" issue, you could be clever and do it at an angle: figure out what your lay direction is, and get a parallelogram of your primary material to be the "bed" section. Fill in the corners with your second colour. That way, the seams will be out of your way. If you want the "stripes along the sides" effect, make it wider, and add a knotty mod so that the extra fabric stays out of your way.

That issue makes tons of sense. Also, the doagonal sewn hammock sounds really cool. Maybe another option would be doing a single sheet of nylon to lay on and sew the three piece section on bottom, effectively making a double layered hammock? Don't know if that would get rid of the seam or not.

If you're really intent on going "colorful", try Ripstop by the Roll's OutdoorINK line. There's enough variety over there to satisfy just about every interest.

That looks like a solid option. Thanks for the input!

This set-up would place the sewn seams in cross-wise tension. Any broken thread in the seam could cause the whole thing to unzip. The seams should run parallel with the load not against it. Not to say it could not be done, but extra care and consideration is needed.

Just a thought, why not do a double layer hammock with a patchwork outer layer?

The hammock in the right side is Outdoor pattern “Coloring Book”. Super bright and no seams.
