    Question Down Allergy?

I was sleeping with a down throw over me last night. I got a few hives and itching. The throw came from bed bath and beyond not Costco. Not sure of the material it's made from but the down can poke through and come out.

I have two questions. Is there a reasonable material to protect an allergic person from the down, Will I be forever restrained to synthetic ?

I've used the throw numerous times but with all my day clothes on, slept in underwear only.

You could be having a reaction to something the fabric or down is treated with. I would wash it and dry it along with letting it spend some time outside in the sunshine then try it again. I had similar issues with a down throw I got from LL Bean. Washing it took care of my issue.

I have a similar problem with my Costco down throws. when I use them I can feel my skin prickle and my lungs tense up. when I use my JC Penny synthetic throws I have no issues.

Glad I'm not alone in this. I was hospitalized in anaphylactic shock due to what we believe was laundry detergent. It's not fun and can be very deadly. I do think the materials sold to keep down inside should make it safe to use. There would be no contact with the skin at all.

I was going to suggest washing in a fragrance free/additive free laundry detergent but I'm guessing you probably already switched to that if you were hospitalized for laundry detergent.

Revisiting this for some info from anyone that has a down allergy. What does it look like on your skin? Is it even visible? Did you have it from the first use or did it pop up after several uses, or even years?

My popped up after my first night using the throw and after a good washing in Tide, beating it to death in the dryer with my tennis shoes, and hanging on the line for 3 days in the sun, it never made me itch and welt up again. It had to be something the down had been treated with.
