Hammocking at BSA SeaBase Munson Island using Monolite

I spent 5 days hammocking on Munson Island in the Florida Keys using my DIY monolite hammock. I have to say it is the most comfortable hammock I have ( I am 225lbs). Its perfect for sleeping in 85 degree weather with an ocean breeze. I made one for my assistant scout master and we both slept really well.

On Muson Island there is not a lot of choice where to hang mostly low branchs with trees close together so I shortened my ridge line to 120" and brought many choices for of straps and whoopee slings. I used a liner made with permethrin that worked well when the breeze stopped and the no see-ums came in full force. I suggest you bring a bug net if you plan to go there with the scouts.

its was good as expected. I am scuba certified (PADI) and have done deep sea fishing before so not much was new to me but the boys had a great time and got to snorkel, fish and kayak.

They do a great job at Sea Base (Brinton) getting new crews up and running, getting them out to the island and keeping everyone safe. I am sure the other bases like Islemorda do a great job too.

Nice! I am interested in the Monolite material & its use for an ultralight hammock... what is the weight of your DIY hammock?

With 10 inch continous loops and ridge line it comes to 8.55 ozs (244g)

I just came back from a week of our Boy Scout summer camp and having my DIY Monolite hammock was so nice given the weather was hot and humid. I used my WBBB for sleeping because of the convenience of the shelf but lounging around camp in the Monolite hammock was nice

I love the Monolite fabric.. My favorite thus far.

Did an 11'r with half zippers for a removable Half Wit style bug net and couldn't be happier. Well, maybe if I was hanging with the OP in Florida!
Yes, my pack weighs 70lbs, but it's all light weight gear....

What is your ridge line length? I just made another Monolite 11 ft hammock with an adjustable ridge line that I have set at 119 inches and just doesn't seem to be as dialed in as my other hammocks

Funny you ask that.. I made it a standard 83% (109.5") but it always seems to be loose, while the lay is fine. If I hang another hammock first, and leave the suspension set, then hang the Monolite, there is noticeable slack in the SRL.

119" seems way, way too long. Why are you going that long?
