Rookie question here: Why not get a 0 degree underquilt for all seasons?

I camped out one really hot night last summer with a 40 topquilt that I had mostly kicked off and my Phoenix 3/4 20 hung but pulled all the way to one side.About an hour or two before dawn it was time to engage the underquilt.Better to have them than not in summer.Since I usually sleep cold I seldom get overheated in the hammock once the sun is down.

I have a 0 degree Wooki and I am able to sleep most of the year pretty comfortably. I am a cold sleeper though and get cold easily. The biggest downside I experience is that it takes up a lot of room in my pack. I made a DIY UQ from a Costco throw and a DIY UQ 30 degree to give me more flexibility. Also, it will give the the ability to stack quilts this winter to stay warmer when it really gets cold out

I disagree. See my signature for test temps. I know everyone is different when it comes to comfort but for me...Greylock 3/4 is fine from 15°-60° or so.

I use my Zeppelin the same way - 70*F down to 20*F - I only break out the Zero when temps or wind dictate below 10* or so. I am also about your age 46 and like sleeping HOT. For example I don't like wind blowing on me when I'm sleeping - it could be 80 in the bedroom and I need a sheet on me.....
HYOH and better yet try lots of different stuff - You never know what you're hang is until you try a bunch of different things that don't work. Experience IS wisdom but so is learning what is GOOD advice

I forgot my 40° UQ last night @ Guntersville Lake, AL
I think it got down to about 73° last night.
I put my UQP on for some warmth...worked until about 5am.
The Greylock 3/4 would definitely have been too hot in August in NE Alabama.

In summer I love my 40° under quilt and my 50° top quilt. They pack small and there is no fiddling trying to vent the under quilt to stop getting a sweaty back.

In winter my 20° under quilt is much better at keeping me warm. Where I camp, the 20° is enough, so there is no need for a 0° under quilt.

Whether owning two sets of quilts is a problem would probably depend on your finances, some people can easily afford it while others need to be a bit more careful with their spending.
