Scout Camp - Group Hang Campsite?

Hey folks. Scouter from MN and working on a Wood Badge ticket. Our troop's scoutmaster and ast. SM both love hanging. I thought it'd be pretty cool to set up some permanent posts at one of the more remote campsites of our council's scout camp. I'd love to know if any is aware of other scout camps that have done something like this. It'd help my proposal to the council if I could reference some other camps. I know that they will be concerned about liability and all that so checking out how another council handled it would help me support the idea.

    Appreciate any help!

I've been to most of the camps in Area 1 and have not seen anything like this. That said, I think this could be a great idea. I know camp directors and rangers are concerned about tree damage so this strikes me as a way to at least avoid those concerns. Just like the general public, there are both Scouts and Scouters who aren't enlightened about using tree-friendly suspension and the staff doesn't want to be tied up with policing. I get that.

It would take just the right kind of site to pull this off so that it still remained tent friendly. A site with a well-built hanging structure could end up being in demand and might even lead to more projects in the future.

I don't see where liability would be a major concern if the structure was properly constructed. Liability has never come up in discussions, only risk to the trees.

Scout Camp - Group Hang Campsite?

Check out the Hang Your Own Hang podcast and website. Both Mark and Jonathan are scout leaders and hangers. I believe they have had some guests that have built hanging "sites" either at scout camps or in state parks. They are a great resource and I'm sure can help you with your Wood Badge project.

captaincoupal is Jonathan's handle here on HF.

Camp Rotary in Clare, MI, a Michigan Crossroads Council camp, has a Hammock village made up of donated telephone poles in the standard hexagon configuration with a center post. Allows for up to 12 hangers. Our Troop has kicked around the idea of a service project to set poles in "our" summer camp site but have not done so to this date.

    Sounds like an interesting ticket.

I think the girl scouuts did this on the Suwannee river camps in Florida. I don’t know much information other than that.

Telephone poles sounds like a great idea. The local utility company might have some they are getting rid of since hammocks whould need much shorter than the utility poles.

What is the standard configuration you speak of? How many feet between poles?

He also made the arguement for a hammock village and Scouting in the following post.
