Looking for a new tarp

The dcf with doors is bulky, be warned. The palace is a monster- too big for me. I have an 11’ HG with doors for 11’ hammocks. I’ve used a 10’ with an 11’ hammock, also fine. Both when it comes to packability, takes some getting used to.

I don't know. Much ado is made about the "bulk" of DCF tarps. But I have a hard time seeing an issue. Here are pics of both my 12' HG Dyneema Standard Tarp w/Doors and 11' silpoly hex tarp. I think the DCF packs plenty small in my mesh snakeskin with the ridgeline cordage wrapped around it. It's a little bigger than my 11' silpoly hex tarp- but not significantly so.

I don't have particularly large hands either.

I don't buy the "bulk of DCF" argument either, since my tarp is always in an outside pocket of the backpack anyway. Makes no difference to me.

I also don't understand why 12' tarps for 11' hammocks have increased in popularity. It's just more weight with negligible benefit. An 11' tarp is fine for my 11 ft. hammock.

Another here with an 11’ Standard DCF with doors. Been through some big rain storms without an issue under it. I started out a little worried since I came from using a SuperFly but never had an issue.

It's all about having extra space under the tarp when using a 11 foot hammock with a 12 foot tarp. This past weekend at a 4 day 3 night basecamp, I used my 12 foot SLD Winter tarp with my 10 foot hammock. Tons of extra room plus we had a huge storm come through Friday night and heavy rain most of Saturday afternoon.

There's no right or wrong when picking lengths...do your own thing and figure out what works best for you.

You can say that the bulk doesn't bother you, but there's no doubt that the size in the pack (or on the outside) is very significantly different.

I just upgraded from the hex tarp to the one with doors. The hex tarp would cover my Chameleon, but I needed to pitch it just right. With doors it is now perfect. Both hammock and tarp are 11 feet. I guess I see no need for extra material. I feel a winter tarp is overkill for me and I do do winter camping. I also have mine in camo. I love the privacy it gives as well as blocking the sun a little more.

To clarify my previous comment, DCF can be very bulky or not- depending on how you pack it. I would argue that if your DCF tarp looks like an NFL sized football when packed, you may want to rethink your packing strategy. The way I pack my tarps, all of the added bulk is vertical space. Take a look at the picture I posted earlier, and you'll notice that it looks much different than what you see in those other threads. Since my tarp stays on the outside of my pack in a side pocket, the additional vertical space the tarp takes up means nothing- because the amount of pocket space taken up is effectively the same as my silpoly tarp. In short, I can still put all of the items in that pocket that I have always put there- regardless of which tarp I choose to carry.

I will say that the effect of the added bulk has a lot to do with the design of your pack. I use a ULA Ohm, which has very generous side pockets.

I believe I'm going to go with the palace with a 12 foot ridgeline. I like the extra room it will provide. Either way its lighter than my eno profly
