Snake Skin Help for Mountainfly Tarp

    I'm a noob.

Okay, now that that's out of the way. I just received my WB XLC and Mountainfly Tarp with snake skins.

What is the best way to set these up on the tarp? On both ends of the tarp, there is a metal ring. Does that need to pass through the small holes on the end of the snake skin? (one end is open, the other is sewn 90% of the way) If so, how do you keep it from going back inside the snake skin?

    Thanks for the help, mates!

I use a mini caribiner to attach to the split ring that runs through the small hole. It has never allowed the snakeskin to pull through, have used it dozens of times.

Okay, I did try that for now. Just wasn't sure if there was a better way. It came with 2 mini biners and I assume that's what they intended.

    Thanks!

Snake Skin Help for Mountainfly Tarp

There are a few ways, but anything will work really. You could use the key ring that comes with the tarp to also capture the loop at the end of the skin. Or use a SMALL S-biner. What’s good about these options is that the hardware is small enough in size to allow the snakeskin’s small hole to completely “invert” and not get caught up on a larger “keychain” biner. This keeps your skin completely off the tarp as long as you have a bit of room to put the skin on the remaining line between the trees, so that water won’t find a trail leading underneath your tarp. I use a split tarp ridgeline. A continuous ridgeline would probably not allow you to keep the skin off the tarp, but still on the line like that though.

The way I do it, is I larks head the loop right onto the tarp loop. I use skins that are made by SLD, so your loops may not work if they are too small. It takes a bit of fiddling and origami to get it working, but it’s lighter, cheaper, and nothing to snag on. Essentially, you need to lark the skin on while the skin is turned inside out. If you need to remove the skin often, then this is probably not worth the hassle.

    Edit:
One more option. If you use Dutch Stingerz, then you could clip the skin into the Stinger. One and Done!

I normally just pull the tiny ring through then synch the snakeskin up. It works ok on my superfly.

If you leave your tarps ridgeline attached and inside the snake skin, the skin can come completely off the tarp but dangle on the ridgeline. When you're setting up, snake the ridgeline through the entire snake skin, then connect to the trees. When you break camp, and deploy the snake skin, you'll have the ridgeline inside the skin along with the tarp...
Yes, my pack weighs 70lbs, but it's all light weight gear....
