Getting a hammock through airport security

Has anyone ever tried to get a hammock and straps through airport security in your carry-on? I can't find anything on the TSA website that forbids it (and if you are bored someday take a look at some of the strange stuff you are actually allowed to bring on the plane!), but you catch a security person in a bad mood and you never know.

We are planning a trip to Banff in Canada in September and I'd like to throw the old Darien in to have for breaks on our day hikes while we are there. I do not, however, want to donate it to the TSA in the process.

If I can get homebrewed ham radio gear on a plane, you can get hammocks on. The only thing they might question is the hardware. 'Biners they've probably seen before; dutch hooks, wasps, fleas, cinch buckles, etc, probably not. Keep the hardware accessible for quick inspection and you should be OK.

I've never had an issue. Just double checked the only things that might be an issue. Tent pegs for the tarp check or like camp stove fuel buy locally.

Sadly, the technology doesn't currently exist to create a real lightsaber. However, you can pack a toy lightsaber in your carry-on or checked bag. May the force be with you.

I was pretty shocked last month to find a Bic lighter in my backpack after getting to the hotel. Crazy! I forgot it was in there. How easy would it be to go to the bathroom and light an entire wad of toilet paper on fire? But then you see some of the stuff on a list you can't take. That would make one a poo-bomber, not to be confused with the shoe bomber.

I did have one in my carry on a couple years back and had no issue with it but, the Dutch bling did cause them to pull me aside. They inspected it and let me pass. As others have said, leave the stakes at home and either buy new or use sticks.

Zippo and Bic lighters are preferred to be carry-on unless you have an TSA approved case. Plasma Arc lighters are not allowed at all.

    Disposable and Zippo Lighters
    Carry On Bags: Yes
    Checked Bags: Yes (Special Instructions)
Disposable and Zippo lighters without fuel are allowed in checked bags. Lighters with fuel are prohibited in checked bags, unless they adhere to the Department of Transportation exemption, which allows up to two fueled lighters if properly enclosed in a DOT approved case.

If you want official word on just about any item just look it up on the TSA allowable items list. It is a much better way of getting info than from a random crowd on the internet.

www.tsa.gov What Can I Bring on a Plane list.

and if you still have questions:

For items not listed, simply snap a picture or send a question to AskTSA on Facebook Messenger or Twitter, from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. ET weekdays; 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekends/holidays.

We actually get pretty good service for $7.79 billion.

3 weeks ago San Diego airport, TSA, no interest in my hammock. They did inspect my can of tuna fish though. Why would they be interested in a hammock? I was afraid to try tent stakes, so I brought a hammock to be on the safe side.

It’s not a problem. Recently flew to Hawaii with my hammock / suspension in carryon.

I’ve traveled all over the US by air with a hammock, tree straps and whoopie sling suspension, in my carry on, with no issues. I’ve not had stakes with me however.

My experience with TSA has been 99 % positive even when I did something dumb like forgot a water in my pack.

If I leave my tent pegs at home then my entire hammock system - hammock, quilts and tarp - is metal free (apart from maybe the zipper on the bug net).
It would raise no interest from any scanner.
Another benefit of using basic knots rather than bling.

Note that if coming to Aus you need to make sure your gear is really clean as they will look at it hard to make sure you’re not bringing in seeds and bugs.
