It also depends on how tired you are. I have been scared of every noise before. But one night I woke up to a pack of coyotes eating a deer carcus a few yards away from where I was hanging. Typically that should of freeked me out, but I was super tired... and just fell back asleep.

I have found that avoiding that comforting cup of tea/coffee at night helps quite a bit.I changed over to hot apple cider mix.

When all else fails, foam ear plugs work a treat.

I have trouble with this too and am reading through this thread for good ideas.

Once I was in the backcountry and a bear came to the edge of camp. My buddy turned on a flashlight and saw it in the bushes. It turned around and left. I know black bears rarely attack but it put something in my head that's a little hard to shake.

Once I camped at a very high-altitude site that was DEAD SILENT. No bugs, no nothing. That actually creeped me out just as badly. And in the middle of the night a Lynx screamed in the distance (sounds like a woman being murdered). Surprisingly that didn't help either!

I'm just a jumpy SOB. Now I take a sleep aid with me (pill version of zzzquil) and earplugs. It does help. The idea of being "defenseless" creeps me out but nothing should really be attacking me in the night anyway.

Best way to overcome the stress of sleeping in the wilderness would be to take your hammock to the worst part of the nearest large city and spend three hours hanging between a couple of light poles on the sidewalk.
The creatures in the woods will seem downright inviting compared to the creatures in the city.

I havent solo'd yet, but my first night, i barely slept. A substantial down pour, and a leaking tarp made it a restless night. And to make it worse, as i was dozing off, i felt something push my left side. I figured it was a raccoon trying to see what this large green thing was between the trees. That being said, one night hanging at the RV, i heard two raccoons hissing and fighting about 18ft behind me. That sent images of a mad raccoon shredding my UQ, so i packed up and went inside.
Honestly.....theres nothing really to be scared off....except dogman. Do not listen to dogman stories bwfore you go out.

Yeah, it’s called work your arse off and only get 4-5 hours sleep each night. You’ll have no problems going to sleep as soon as you get the chance!
