    Help with a new project

    Hi!

Making a costum hammock for a friend if mine.
She wanted it to be 370cm long and 160cm wide, and wanted to have a removable (zipper) insulation underneath. Any tips on how to make it?

    My idea:
    370cm main body
    200cm insulation with Apex clinashield
    Seperating Zipper on long sides
Roll hem short edges and insert bungiecord

She also wanted a shelf (like the blackbird)

    Any pointers?

Will be posting guide if it is successful!

My first pointer would be not to put a zipper on an underquilt. That won’t work at all unless it also has something to hold it up in addition to holding it on. But if you have that, then you don’t need a zipper.

There have been plans for a DIY Blackbird shelf posted years ago on this forum. Search should bring up several projects.

From what I'm learning underquilts benefit a lot being attached with elastic cords. This way they can be adjusted and move around the sleeper when he/she changes his position during the night. Also it doesn't put any tension on the hammock like zippers might. And its an easier and cheaper solution.

I would suggest a wookie type insulation if she doesn’t want bungies. It is like an attached underquilt that doesn’t need much adjusting and it is removeable. Plus, it has been tried and tested and works. I am afraid the zip on underquilt will sag and have gaps that will make it useless. Plus if the insulation goes from edge to edge of the hammock you are wasting a lot of insulation where it is not needed.
The essential part of me can not be discussed here. Ask me in person.

Perhaps - don't get me wrong I think it is a cool concept just to feasible for deep winter camping. I was hoping that Jellyfish had a tutorial that showed, outlined, or explained how to dart the sides of a synthetic quilt.

Sweet please do! I'm in the planning stages but I plan on filming mine so I'll probably have a YouTube video up when I finish
