Help/AMOK/Temp. Control

Not counting Boy Scouts I started backpacking about 14 months ago and have been out a dozen nights. I have an AMOK Draumr 3.0, which I have used each night. The hammock is extremely comfortable. My issue is temperature control and I’m not sure if it has anything to do with the hammock. It seems no matter what the temperature is outside I end up being clammy and cold during the night and don’t get much sleep. My first night out was in the upper 30s, I had a 20-degree synthetic mummy bag, which I was in, and I had 150-weight Smart Wool long underwear and socks on along with a wool hat. When I turned in I was fine but it was not too long before I was both cold and hot if that makes any sense. I would unzip and try to vent without much success. That was the first and last time I got in the bag, after that I used it like a quilt. Better, but still not good.

A few weeks ago the temperature was in the mid-50s. I had a JRB 40-degree top quilt, 150-weight long underwear and woke up clammy and cold. I have no trouble sleeping at home. I’m at a loss.

Does anyone have any advice? I feel that I am one trip away from going back to just day hiking. Thanks!

I was under the impression that most people use pads with an Amok Draumr. I've never heard of anyone going without a pad.

Their website says, "Always use with an inflatable sleeping pad for ultimate comfort and insulation." There's a page that lists compatible pads.

Ditch the clothes! That base layer is likely too much with the insulation you're using, I know it would be for me. Less is more when it comes to sleep wear. Looks like you have more than adequate insulation without wearing a base layer.

This was my thought as well. In both cases you described, you had a 10 degree buffer on your top insulation, and if you're using an Amok pad, that's good down to 25° which would mean you've got the right insulation for the conditions. If you were hot/cold and clammy you may have been sweating in your base layer and then getting a chill from that. Venting the topquilt or sleeping bag would only increase that chilling. Try to match your clothing and insulation so that you'll be comfortable while wearing as little clothing as you can get away with. Try lighter socks or no socks and a synthetic t-shirt.

On the other hand, if you're using a different pad that isn't rated for the sort of temps you're encountering, that could be part of the problem even though your top insulation is adequate.

If you're waking up clammy, it's most likely from sweating. Is some part of your system acting as a vapor barrier, maybe the pad?

It's just interesting the OP never mentions a pad, when a pad would seem to be the most important part of the Draumr.
