I just hiked into Pigeon river area. Hammock set up to take refuge. Bug city!!
Speed walking sort of kept the mosquitoes off. Black flies kept up. Ticks...super thirsty and just waiting for me.
I'm back. What a trip. I knew there was a good chance of it being pretty miserable, but, yeah, it was.
Every time I touched anything green, I could look down and have a 50/50 chance of seeing this:
Mosquitoes were HUGE and hungry. Flies were even worse but not biting...just buzzing me from 10am-5pm nonstop.
But I had to get out. Weekend was free. Gagged them lollies. Longest day of the year! Swimming in the Sturgeon River was all I really wanted to do. Success.
I called the ranger's office a couple of times on Saturday but nobody ever answered.
Due to the previous couple of posts regarding the black flies, mosquitoes and ticks, my buddy and I have decided to look for another trail as our backpacking destination. Maybe we will do this one some other time when conditions are less favorable for the bugs.
Thanks for all the input.

Yesterday Michigandave said he spoke with the Cadillac/Manistee ranger. Ticks and mosquitoes at an all time high. I doubt it changes much over the state since it was a pretty wet spring. Plenty warm now too. 68 days til Fall...days are getting 2 minutes shorter every day!!
