I don't usually use trekking poles and enjoy the using the handloops on my ULA pack instead. For porch mode I always find some green branches to use. You could also use one of Zpacks staff's, they seem to be a pretty neat alternative and much longer.
Some days I can't tell whether I found a rope or lost a horse...
I bought some aluminum tubing with male and female ends from Bear Paw Wilderness Designs. I also bought the inserts for the ends and some shock cord and assembled exactly what I needed.
Another vote for found sticks if not using trekking poles. A clove hitch holds guyline to stick, but truth is you can throw on just about any kind of crazy wrap and it'll probably hold.
